Five recommended cycling courses you can casually enjoy in Tokyo 【no need to own a bicycle】

In this article, I would like to introduce some parks in Tokyo where anyone can easily enjoy cycling. Even if you don’t own a bicycle, no need to worry! There are several large parks in Tokyo that offer bicycle rentals. So whether you have a bicycle or not, these parks are worth checking out.

Yoyogi Park

A cycling course rich in nature

Yoyogi Park, located in Shibuya Ward, is a “park with a nature-filled cycling course” where you can rent bicycles of various sizes for adults and children. You can enjoy the vibrant nature that can be hard to find in Tokyo.

There are no rules against bringing your own bicycle to this course. Therefore, this park is recommended for those who want to ride their newly-bought bicycles or for those who enjoy cycling on a regular basis.

There is also a cycling plaza for young children adjacent to the park, so even children who are not used to riding bicycles can enjoy the park safely. You can also rent bicycles with auxiliary wheels, making it a great place for children to practice biking.

Have a go riding a tandem bicycle

At Yoyogi Park, you can rent a tandem bicycle for two people. Tandem bicycles are such  interesting bicycles where it will only successfully move when the two cyclists pedal at the same time.

This bicycle may seem a little difficult to ride because it requires two people to work cooperatively and to sync up the pedaling. However, this will be a nice bonding activity as you work together to overcome this challenge while also making a fun memory at the same time.

I recommend this bike for couples, spouses, parents and children, and friends who wish to have a blast of a time trying something new.

Koganei Park

Dedicated cycling course

In addition to the bicycle rental facilities, Koganei Park has a dedicated “cycling course”. This course is for cyclists only, so you can enjoy cycling without worrying about pedestrians and cars.

As you start riding on the 1.8 km long course, you will come across a vast grassland. After riding on the paved bike path, you will enter a beautiful forest that will make you feel as if you are in the mountains.

This cycling course is not too long and not too short, so it is recommended for both children and adults to spend a pleasant time in nature.

Tamako Bicycle Path

If you enjoy biking, this is the place for you!

If you’re reading this article, you’re probably someone who wants to make cycling a new hobby or wants to go on a long trip with your own bicycle. For such a person, I would like to recommend the Tamako Bicycle Path.

The Tamako Bicycle Path is a 21.9 km long bicycle and pedestrian path that starts near Koganei Park and ends at Lake Tama.

There are also parks and benches along the way where you can take a break as you enjoy cycling. This is also a good spot for beginners who want to make cycling a hobby, as it is a straight path and you will never get lost.

Showa Kinen National Park

You can rent tandem bicycles AND unicycles

Showa Kinen National Park is a large park that straddles the cities of Tachikawa and Akishima, and has a 14km long “cycling course” along with a wide variety of recreational facilities.

At the three cycling centers located at the Tachikawa, West Tachikawa, and Sunagawa entrances, bicycles of various sizes for both children and adults can be rented.

Many people rent bicycles at each location for the purpose of transportation in the park because it is far too large to fully explore on foot.

At Showa Kinen National Park, you can rent a tandem bicycle for two people, just like at Yoyogi Park. In addition, this park also rents out unicycles and has a special course for them.

Many people bring their own bicycles

Showa Kinen National Park, with its 14km long course and stunning natural surroundings, is a popular destination for many cyclists living in the Tokyo area. You can see many experienced cyclists bring their own road bikes and cross bikes to ride around the park.

I highly recommend Showa Kinen National Park not only to those who want to enjoy cycling casually or to those who want to take up cycling as a new hobby, but also to experienced cyclists who are looking for a proper cycling course to relieve that cycling itch.

Tama River Cycling Road

If you want the full cycling experience, this is the place

Near Showa Kinen National Park, the Tama River flows from Yamanashi Prefecture through Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture to Tokyo Bay, and there is a long stretch of cycling road along both banks of this river.

On this bike path, you can ride your bike under the vast sky as you feel the refreshing breeze along the river. The long straight roads make it a fun and challenging bike path.

Unlike the parks where you can rent bicycles, you will need to bring your own bike. However, if you want to make cycling a more serious hobby while you’re in Tokyo, I highly recommend this cycling spot.
